Visiting Scholars (2001-2002)


SPRING 2002

Jon Miller, Polson Institute's first "Affiliated Scholar", is a radio journalist with 13 years experience in broadcast and print journalism in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the US. He has produced hundreds of reports for NPR, CBC, BBC, The learning Channel, and others. As Executive Producer he developed a six-part radio documentary project entitled "Worlds of Difference" that examines the homogenization of global culture. Each program in the series weaves together documentary features, interviews with leading thinkers, brief readings, ambient and collected sounds, narration, and original and archival music. Jon is also Executive Producer for "World at Work", currently Homelands Productions' largest project. It consists of 24 audio and web profiles of workers in the global economy. These profiles will be broadcast by Marketplace Radio, public radio's daily show about business and economics. They will also be presented on an interactive website featuring photography and additional information for students, web users and radio listeners.


FALL 2002

Mark Shucksmith (October 20-November 2), University of Aberdeen, Professor and Chair of Department of Land Economy and co-director of the Arkelton Centre for Rural Development Research. Shucksmith's research focuses on rural development, social exclusion, and housing.

Graeme Hugo (October 30-November 13), University of Adelaide, Professor, Department of Geographical and Environmental Studies and Director, Key Centre in Research and Teaching in the Social Science Application of GIS. Hugo's research focuses on urban and population geography, development in Southeast Asia, and immigration.
