International Agricultural Trade Policy

This Research Network is anchored in collaboration among researchers at institutes concerned with the question of agricultural trade and its implications for farming populations. Founding members represent the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (Minneapolis), the Munk Center for International Studies (University of Toronto), and the Polson Institute for Global Development (Cornell University). Three workshops have been held over the past four years: at the Munk Center (Toronto), the Polson Institute (Ithaca), and in Paraty, Brazil, in collaboration with ActionAid Brazil. The goal is to develop a positive program for an Alternative Multilateralism concerned with rethinking international trade rules geared to producing sustainable outcomes for rural cultures and regional cuisines, rather than implementing 'comparative advantage' in a highly uneven world and destabilizing local food systems. Goals are (1) to share knowledge across the world of trade impacts, and document alternatives that contribute to the goals of social and ecological sustainability, and (2) to use this data to formulate alternative policy goals, respecting different models in different spaces, to encourage action through the international development institutions and associated agencies like the FAO and the WHO.
