Social Movements

The Social Movements RWG, dedicated to exploring contemporary social change through the lens of social movement activity, has divided its time between regular working meetings, oriented by a set of readings on social movements/theory, developing a position paper, hosting a small number of speakers, and organizing a graduate-student led conference at Cornell in Spring 2003. The latter brought together a dozen presenters, from coast to coast, to address theoretical and methodological questions concerning social movements. The RWG is now focusing on developing a monograph on the question of social movement research and analysis. The goal is to construct a volume with chapters reporting research (dissertation or otherwise) undertaken by members of the RWG, through an initial process of establishing a collaborative framework for coherence and representation of a unique approach to the subject from Cornell. Contributors have written positions, held a mini-retreat in October 2005, and written a small grant proposal to fund a conference at which contributors will present their work.
