One-Time Opportunities for Faculty

Faculty members (including senior associates and lecturers) often require small amounts of one-time money to accomplish concrete short-term objectives such as the completion of a research proposal, a book, an educational module, etc. Taking advantage of targets of opportunity can often lead to successful long-term research collaboration, significant research funding, and high visibility scholarly accomplishments. Funding for these types of activities is seldom available, and hence these activities are often linked to other projects, using funds obtained for other purposes.

Application/Selection Process
Applications for one-time target of opportunity funding should be sent to the Polson Institute’s director via e-mail (Doug Gurak) indicating the purpose for which the funds are being requested, and how obtaining these purposes will benefit the applicant and the Polson Institute.

This category of assistance should not be considered to be a general travel fund to support faculty attendance at conferences or workshops, etc. However, bootstrapping attendance at a professional meeting or conference onto a trip that is primarily motivated by the opportunity to work with colleagues on a scholarly project (a book, a proposal, an educational module, a survey questionnaire, etc.) is acceptable. Each request should specify the concrete research outcome(s) that will be accomplished, the purposes for which funds are needed, and the amount of funds requested. Maximum funding is $1500 per faculty member, per year. Applications can be made at any time of the year. Allocations will be made by the director depending on the merit of the request, and the amount of funds available. Awardees will be required to prepare a report on the activity for publication on the Institute’s website.
