Food Systems in the Global Economy

This RWG has followed up a series of brown bag lunch meetings over the past two years with a new, advanced graduate seminar in the Sociology of Food, offered by Thomas Lyson and Philip McMichael. Future plans include writing a training grant in the area of agriculture and food systems in the global economy, and planning research on issues concerning food regimes and agricultural sustainability. In the most general sense, this RWG is concerned with how the structure of agriculture is being transformed in a globalized world and how well this new structure is able to (a) produce abundant and healthful food and fiber, (b) provide a living wage for persons in the industry, and (c) support sustainable agriculturally based rural communities.

The White Paper for the Future of American Agriculture symposium, 2001-02, was sponsored by CALS and the Polson Institute. To view the paper click here.
