My research focuses on two areas: (1) gender systems and reproduction and (2) determinants and consequences of international migration to industrialized countries. Under the first line of research, I am engaged in a study of how gender systems shape attitudes and behavior toward reproduction in Nigeria. This collaborative project with the Nigerian Institute for Social and Economic Research involves analysis of data from a 1991 field survey of six ethnic groups. The study objective is to identify which women and couples are most likely to be innovators in the area of reproduction and to assess how ethnicity and community of residence shape reproductive outcomes.
Under the second line of research, I am examining how immigrant groups differ in their settlement and integration strategies within the United States. One project involves analysis of nativity group differentials in internal migration in the USA. Another project focuses on group differentials inelderly living arrangements.
